Iranian “Reformist” Candidate for President Supports Hamas
Iranian presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi has said he’d continue Iranian sponsorship of Hamas if he wins. Some “moderate.” Karroubi is generally regarded as currently being in third place in the race, with current President Ahmadinejad in first and the “reformist” Moussavi in second.
It seems that the media needs a reminder that the “reformists” running for president of Iran are not as liberal as they claim to be. After all, the candidates have to be approved by the regime, and the mullahs have the capability to disqualify anyone they want. The candidates are debating ways to strengthen the government–arguing over whether limited economic liberalization or the current course is best for the government. None of them are calling for significant political change, and they are certainly not calling for ending the non-democratic powers of the Supreme Leader and Council of Guardians.
