Revolutionary Guards Reportedly Now In Charge of Suppressing Tehran Demonstrations
Some breaking news sent to me from Iranians:
- Over 500,000 people demonstrated in Tehran today and the crowd has grown. We’ll have a better idea of numbers as time goes on.
- Regime forces are firing tear gas at the crowds forming at Rezaii Square. Photos show many demonstrators covering their faces to minimize the pain.
- Shiraz University has closed until further notice due to a fire in the library. At least ten buses were set on fire in the area as well.
- 300 people have been arrested in Mashhad. The regime’s top security official here is reportedly using 250 mobile prisons around Torqobeh District to hold those detained for ten days. The prisoners are said to be beaten and tortured.
- Ayatollah Khamenei has put the Revolutionary Guards in charge of security in Tehran and the forces’ operatives are now engaging the demonstrators.
- There are reports of severe torture in the Interior Ministry’s basement under the leadership of Farhad Rahbar, the head of Tehran University. This is unconfirmed.
- Demonstrators have lit another Basiji base on fire on Valiasr Street in Tehran, but did not overtake the site.
