Georgia Not Staying Down, Sending Troops to Afghanistan
On July - 14 - 2009
The former Soviet Republic of Georgia was attacked by neighboring Russia last year. This assault was devastating to the Georgian economy, infrastructure, and military. Despite this invasion, the small democratic nation has declared plans to assist its allies in the fight in Afghanistan. About 600 troops are planned to leave for Afghanistan next year.
Georgian troops have largely been trained by the United States and have fought in the Pankisi Gorge area, as well as the August 2008 war against Russia. In addition, 2,000 Georgian troops (including 300 special forces) performed remarkably in Iraq.
