There’s been a very surprising fatwa issued by a senior Saudi cleric that deserves more attention. The  fatwa says a woman can hit her husband back in self-defense, and even kill him if he’s trying to kill her. This strikes at the very core of radical Islam and Wahhabism and if given enough coverage, goes a long way in liberalizing the more radical, fundamentalist elements of Islamic society. The oppression of women is so great that even “moderates” often oppose women’s rights, and we consider them liberal and inspiring by comparison.

Things are changing quickly in Saudi Arabia and the Islamic world as a whole. And nearly every observer is missing it.
