What Kim Wants
I believe we have finally found out what the Cheonan sinking is about. Yahoo! news is reporting a Reuters story that tells it all in one paragraph.
“Ri (Ri Jang Gon, North Korea’s deputy ambassador in Geneva), departing from his prepared remarks, said that only the conclusion of a peace treaty between the two countries would lead to the “successful denuclearization” of the peninsula. The 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice but no formal peace treaty.”
Analysis. Bingo. But this is also the bad news. It helps us understand that Kim Jong Un (Kim 3) may well not be up to the task of running the family country without a guarantee of its permanent existence. The good news is that North Korea may come tumbling down after Kim 2 dies. The bad news is that Kim 2 may decide to burn the house down and cause massive destruction throughout the Korean peninsula.
Of course, that is what Kim 2 is counting on. He would rather have the family country continue. If not, well, then the North Korean people weren’t sufficiently imbued with the Juche (self reliance) spirit and dedicated to the Songun (army first) policy. They deserve whatever they get. What they will get is massive destruction possibly with nuclear weapons involved. Kim and his closest friends will most likely reprise the demise of Hitler and his cronies in the Fuhrer Bunker in Berlin.
I would expect to see the PRC start pushing for a peace treaty now that the peace treaty has been officially broached in a multi-national forum.
