Christians in Iraq: The Forgotten Minority
Simply put, there is a near genocide against Christians in Iraq, and to read their story is extremely depressing. Every American should be embarrassed about their persecution. The Iraqi Christians have been very charitable, working with Sunnis and Shiites as if there were no religious differences. They took no part in the insurgency, and did not form extremist militias even when they were getting massacred. They are a peaceful people, and a people with good education, skills, and a Western-oriented philosophy in a country that desperately needs those qualities.
I remember once receiving an email from an individual who opposed the war in Iraq, who argued that the evangelical Christians and Zionist Jews who “hijacked” the American government under Bush were trying to Christianize the Middle East and destroy Islam (this person equated democracy with “Westernization,” “imperialism,” and “Christianization”. The fact that every Iraqi Christian has a heart-breaking story to tell should forever put to rest this ridiculous argument.
Luckily, the surge has helped out their situation a bit. There are photos available of Muslims helping Christians rebuild their churches that were bombed by terrorists, and even attending the first church services once these churches re-opened.
We’ll know when Iraq has truly succeeded when these Christians can return to their homes, putting this bloody episode behind them.
