Putin Preparing Comeback
Russian President Medvedev is proposing that the presidential terms be increased to six years, which could allow Putin to come back into power if Medvedev resigned in 2009. A Russian paper claims that Medvedev is planning various constitution changes, and then will resign, allowing Putin to return to power and remain in office for a very, very long time, as two 6-year terms would allow him to be president from 2009 to 2021.
I’ve long warned that demographic changes and the nature of Russia’s anti-American leadership, which seeks to centralize control as much as possible, could cause hyper-nationalism and aggressive foreign policies. If Medvedev is truly planning a move of this kind, then we may be looking at the transformation of Russia into a fascist-lite state.
