Will Al-Qaeda Get Its Own Country?

Click here for my latest NRB blog. The African Union is talking about sending more troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabaab in the aftermath of the twin bombings in Uganda during the World Cup. As usual, Al-Qaeda has overreached and provoked their enemies. Unfortunately, only a major, costly military effort in Somalia will dislodge the Al-Qaeda affiliate and we do not know yet if the African countries are willing to take that on. At the same time, Eritrea is opposing the sending of more troops and any intervention may push Afewerki to re-establish his ties to al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam (if they truly have been severed).
