Mexican Drug War Escalates: Commentary
What is important to note here is the continuing nexus between the Zetas, the drug gangs and Hezbollah. The drug gangs have only one interest and that is to sell drugs. To that end they do whatever is necessary to control markets, smuggling routes, drug production and drug distribution. For them this is business. Their ideology is the dollar.
Hezbollah is an entirely different matter. They don’t care about the drugs which are grossly unislamic. What Hezbollah cares about is being in a position to attack the United States directly when war comes with Iran. To this end they will assist the drug gangs in return for having their people and equipment smuggled into the United States. There these cells await instructions from Hezbollah headquarters to attack pre-selected targets.
Whether or not the Zetas have seized ranches in Laredo, elsewhere in Texas, New Mexico, California or Arizona is irrelevant. The ranches may have been abandoned by their owners and therefore were just “appropriated”. The danger is that the drug gangs and the most dangerous terrorist organization in the World may have contiguous access to the United States. We have already had drug gangs threaten to shoot off duty police officers who stumble upon drug movements. Who is to say that the snipers employed by the drug gangs are not Hezbollah?
The politics surrounding illegal immigration must give way to securing the United States. Arizona has recognized the threat that the are currently bearing and the one that they might bear and is taking local action. Texas, New Mexico and California must follow suit. The simple truth is that absent the United States Army, the Federal Government does not have sufficient forces to secure the border nor are they of the correct type. There is “low intensity conflict” occurring all along the souther border. It is time that we recognized that and employed the forces trained to deal with this situation. The Border Patrol is not it.
