Iran and Syria Sign Naval Deal
The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Ba’athist dictatorship of Syria have been fairly close allies for almost ten years. Now, as Iranian ships transited the Suez Canal on their way to a Syrian port, the two countries have signed a cooperation bill. This news comes from Fars News, a mouthpiece for the Mullahs’ regime.
“The Iran-Syria cooperation signifies the depth of the two countries’ ties. We hope to expand the relations between Iran and Syria through the approval of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and establishment of naval ties,” Sayyari noted.
Neither country has a particularly strong navy, but it will counter Israel’s. Considering that both regimes may have potential allies among the rebelling states, it seems like a shrewd move.
