Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya with long-standing ties to the Russian government (especially Putin) is promoting Sharia Law, even going so far as to excuse the murder of women with “loose morals.” Kadyrov has previously found himself in a bit of a scandal, having been caught on videotape “canoodling” shall we say with some prostitutes. It remains unclear whether Kadyrov is truly a radical Muslim or whether this is some stagecraft dreamt up by the his FSB buddies, but the greater point is that the Russian government is going so far as to promote Islamic extremism in its complicated game of chess. Politics makes strange bedfellows.
