Darfur Warrant on Bashir
The dictator of the Sudan, General Omar Bashir, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes. These charges stem from the horrific assaults on the people of Darfur, labeled by the United States as genocide.
“He is suspected of being criminally responsible for intentionally directing attacks against an important part of the civilian population of Darfour, Sudan, murdering, exterminating, raping, torturing and forcibly transferring large numbers of civilians, and pillaging their property,” ICC spokesperson Laurence Blairon said.
This is certainly a step in the right direction, but as usual it appears that there are no teeth to back up this resolve. In any case, it could set a positive precedent in case of a coup.
