Syrian Military’s Facebook Page Shut Down

Posted by Trevor Westra On May - 9 - 2011

The official page of the Syrian Military was shutdown Friday by Facebook, according to CNN. The page had more than 60,000 members before it was suspended without notice.

In a report from Egypt’s Al Masry Al Youm, Syrian officials have accused Facebook of “collusion with the alleged Syrian revolution” after a page created by Syrian opposition members was later created and grew to 140,000 members in less than ten minutes.

According to Syria’s state-run Al-Thawra newspaper, the administrator of the Syrian military Facebook page has threatened the company saying “a surprise is being prepared for Facebook in coordination with a number of programmers and engineering students.”

Ironically, this development came the same day that Egypt’s ruling military council created its own Facebook page dedicated ”to the sons and youth of Egypt who ignited the January 25 revolution and to its martyrs.”
